Where and When to Shoot at Cosmic Campground International Dark Sky Sanctuary

The campground has 8 primitive sites and a dedicated paved observing pad with power hookups for telescope equipment. No fee. Located 25 miles from the nearest town (Glenwood, NM) with no light sources visible in any direction. Monsoon season (July–September) brings afternoon storms that often clear overnight — check conditions same-day rather than relying on long-range forecasts.

Dedicated Observing Pad
The paved observing platform faces south with a completely open horizon — the only facility of its kind at a designated dark sky sanctuary. The Milky Way rises directly from the southern horizon with no obstruction or glow. The darkest spot accessible by paved road in New Mexico.
🌿
Campsite Clearings
The 8 primitive campsites give dispersed dark sky access around the central observing pad. Each site has open overhead sky — position your tripod directly from your campsite.
🌵
San Francisco River Valley Below
The valley floor below the campground gives a different angle — looking up toward the ridgeline with the campground lights (red only) visible above. The river gives a reflective foreground element at valley level.
🏔️
Surrounding Gila National Forest Roads
The forest roads within a few miles of the campground give additional dispersed dark sky access. The Bortle 1 sky extends across the surrounding national forest — multiple positions available for variety.
