Where and When to Shoot in Capitol Reef National Park

The Waterpocket Fold is a 100-mile monocline — a geological wrinkle in the Earth's crust. The white Kayenta and Wingate sandstone reflects ambient starlight more than darker rock, making foreground compositions more visible in long exposures. Highway 24 through the park gives direct access to most shooting locations.

🌌
Goosenecks Overlook
The canyon overlook gives elevated views of the deeply incised canyon below and the dome formations beyond. The canyon depth as foreground with the Milky Way above is a strong Capitol Reef composition.
🏜️
Fruita Historic District
The orchards and pioneer homestead structures give unusual foreground — the old barns and fruit trees lit by starlight create compositions different from pure geological subjects.
🌄
Chimney Rock Pullout
The prominent sandstone chimney gives a strong isolated foreground element against the dark sky. The chimney is visible from the highway — easy access without a hike.
Cathedral Valley
The remote northern section of the park has the darkest sky in Capitol Reef and extraordinary temple and monolith formations as foreground. 4WD required — plan for an overnight to make the drive worthwhile.
