Capitol Reef is one of the least-visited national parks in Utah and one of the darkest — Bortle 2 sky with the white Navajo sandstone domes and Waterpocket Fold as foreground. Fewer crowds than Arches or Bryce Canyon with equally strong sky.

The Waterpocket Fold is a 100-mile monocline — a geological wrinkle in the Earth's crust. The white Kayenta and Wingate sandstone reflects ambient starlight more than darker rock, making foreground compositions more visible in long exposures. Highway 24 through the park gives direct access to most shooting locations.
