Where and When to Shoot in Crater Lake National Park

The rim road circles the lake at elevation — almost every pullout gives a lake view. The lake surface reflection requires calm wind conditions; check the forecast before planning a reflection shot. Snow closes most of the rim road from November through June — the southern entrance via Highway 62 stays open year-round but rim access is limited in winter.

🌊
Rim Village Overlook
The most accessible lake viewpoint from the visitor area. The caldera drops away below with the lake surface visible — on calm nights the Milky Way reflects across the deep blue water. The Wizard Island silhouette adds foreground depth.
🏔️
Cloudcap Overlook
The highest point on the rim road at 7,960 feet gives the most elevated dark sky position in the park. The lake below and the surrounding Cascades visible at night — the Milky Way arcs above from this elevated vantage.
🌌
Watchman Overlook
The western rim gives a different lake angle with the Wizard Island closer in the foreground. A short hike to the historic fire lookout tower gives an even more elevated position above the rim road.
🌿
Mazama Campground Area
The campground south of the rim sits in the caldera below lake level — open sky in the caldera bowl. The surrounding rim walls give natural framing for the Milky Way overhead.
