Where and When to Shoot in Great Smoky Mountains National Park

The 'smoky' haze is real — the park's natural terpene emissions create atmospheric haze that affects transparency even on cloud-free nights. The highest elevations (Clingmans Dome, Andrews Bald) rise above the haze layer. Post-frontal clear air after cold fronts consistently produces the best transparency in the Smokies.

🌫️
Clingmans Dome Tower
The 6,643-foot summit is the highest point in the park and in the Appalachians. The observation tower gives 360-degree views above the haze layer. The road to the summit closes November through April — plan accordingly.
🌿
Andrews Bald — High Elevation Meadow
The open grass bald at 5,920 feet gives unobstructed sky in a natural meadow setting. A 3.6-mile round trip hike from Clingmans Dome parking — one of the few open-sky positions in the park.
🌌
Newfound Gap Overlook
The gap in the ridge at 5,046 feet gives views both north into Tennessee and south into North Carolina. The ridge position gives above-valley dark sky with mountain peaks as foreground.
🏔️
Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail Area
The lower elevation trail area gives old-growth forest foreground. The hemlocks and fallen logs create strong dark foreground against a Bortle 4 sky — better for star trail photography than Milky Way.
