Where and When to Shoot in Pinnacles National Park

Pinnacles has two entrances — east and west — and no road connects them through the park. The east entrance is generally less crowded. The park sits in a valley between ridges, so wind is moderated and temperatures are milder than exposed ridge locations. Spring wildflowers (March–April) add foreground colour for pre-dark blue hour compositions.

🌋
High Peaks Trail — Spine Viewpoints
The elevated trail through the volcanic pinnacles gives open sky above the formations. The rock spires silhouette against the Milky Way — a distinctive foreground not available anywhere else in California.
🦅
Bear Gulch Reservoir
The small reservoir in the talus cave area reflects the Milky Way on calm nights. The cave entrances and reservoir give a unique geological foreground combination accessible by a short trail from the east entrance.
🌌
Chalone Creek Trailhead Area
The open meadow at the creek trailhead gives an unobstructed sky with the pinnacle formations visible to the north. A good base position for wide compositions before hiking into the formations.
🌿
West Entrance Picnic Area
The western access area gives open sky with the High Peaks visible to the east. Less terrain obstruction than the formation areas — good for all-sky compositions and planning before committing to a trail hike after dark.
