Drive west from Dallas โ every 100 miles west significantly improves dark sky. The Palo Duro Canyon area (5 hours west) and the Davis Mountains around McDonald Observatory (6 hours west) are the two best targets for serious dark sky from DFW. Each location links to a live StarCast forecast โ click any to check current moon phase, cloud cover, and transparency before you drive.
Location is only half the decision. Moon phase, atmospheric transparency, and cloud cover on the specific night determine whether the drive is worth it. A Bortle 2 location on a full moon night is worse than a Bortle 4 location on a new moon with excellent transparency. Check StarCast for your target location before leaving โ not just the general weather forecast.
