The short answer

Three Things That Determine Star Visibility Tonight

Checking for "clear skies" is the first step, but it's not the whole picture. Cloud cover, moon phase, and light pollution all have to cooperate. A perfectly clear night in a city still shows almost no stars. A cloudy new moon night in a dark location shows nothing. LightCast StarCast combines all three into a single score so you know whether tonight is actually worth going out.

☁️
Cloud Cover at All Layers
Any significant cloud blocks stars completely. StarCast checks low, mid, and high cloud separately. Thin high cirrus — invisible to the naked eye from the ground — still significantly reduces contrast and faint star visibility. A clear forecast doesn't always mean a clear sky at altitude.
🌙
Moon Phase and Timing
A full moon produces enough sky glow to wash out most stars. New moon is the ideal window for stargazing. StarCast shows moon illumination percentage and rise/set times — so even on a night with some moon, you can identify the dark hours before it rises or after it sets.
🌃
Light Pollution (Bortle Class)
From most cities, light pollution limits you to the moon, planets, and a handful of bright stars regardless of weather. Bortle Class 4 or darker is the minimum for seeing the Milky Way and a significant number of stars. StarCast shows your Bortle class so you know whether to drive to a darker location.

Common Questions
Can I see stars tonight from my location?
LightCast StarCast gives you a conditions score for any location based on cloud cover, moon phase, and light pollution. Check lightcastsuite.com/starcast free, or get push notifications on the iOS app.
Why can't I see stars from my city?
Light pollution. Artificial light scatters in the atmosphere and creates a sky glow that drowns out all but the brightest stars. From a typical city centre (Bortle 8–9), you'll see the moon, planets, and maybe 10–20 stars on a clear night. You need Bortle 5 or darker to see a meaningful number of stars, which typically means driving 30–60 miles from an urban centre.
What time is best for stargazing tonight?
The darkest window is typically 11pm to 3am, when astronomical twilight has fully ended and the moon is lower in the sky. StarCast shows tonight's dark window alongside cloud cover so you can see exactly when conditions will be best.
