Does Rain Before Sunset Make It Better?

Rain associated with a cold front passing through is the best scenario. As the front moves east, it leaves behind post-frontal clearing: rising pressure, dropping humidity, cleaner air, and broken cloud in layers. The combination of washed air and dramatic cloud structure as the storm system exits to the east often produces exceptional sunsets. Watch for a rising barometer in the afternoon — that's the signal.

Rain from a stationary low or slow-moving weather system doesn't clear in time for sunset. The overcast stays, the humidity stays high, and there's no frontal passage bringing in clean air. If the forecast shows rain all day with no clearing trend, the sunset will likely be a flat grey. A single cloud cover percentage won't show you this — you need to see the trend.

Convective afternoon thunderstorms — common in the Southwest, Rockies, and Southeast in summer — can set up spectacular sunsets if they clear before the sun goes down. The anvil cloud left behind by dissipating storms catches vivid colour at golden hour. But if storms are still active at sunset, the sky stays dark and dramatic in a different way — not colourful.

Rain washes dust, smoke, and aerosols out of the atmosphere. Post-rain air has lower particulate matter, which improves atmospheric transparency and colour saturation at sunset. The same light travels through cleaner air and produces more vivid tones than it would through hazy pre-rain conditions. This is the mechanism behind the post-rain sunset effect.
