A sunset forecast isn't a single number — it's the overlap of four conditions that each contribute to what you see in the sky. Getting even one of them wrong means missing the shot or the show entirely.

Cloud Altitude: Mid-Level Is the Target

Low stratus at 2,000 feet blocks all light and produces a grey, flat sky. High cirrus above 25,000 feet catches colour but weakly. Mid-level altocumulus at 10,000–20,000 feet is the sweet spot — it catches and reflects warm light from a low sun dramatically. When you see a forecast with broken cloud in that layer, the evening has potential.

Horizon Band: The Most Critical Factor

A clear band near the horizon — even just a few degrees — allows direct sunlight to travel through at the lowest angle and illuminate cloud above it from underneath. Cloud sitting right at the horizon blocks this entirely and kills the colour regardless of what's happening higher up. This is the single variable most standard forecasts don't show.

Humidity: Lower Is More Saturated

High humidity diffuses light and mutes colour. Low humidity after a cold front produces sharp, saturated tones — the difference between a pastel wash and vivid orange and red. Check humidity alongside cloud cover when predicting quality. A clear-horizon, mid-cloud setup with high humidity will still underperform.

The Post-Sunset Peak

The most intense colour rarely happens at the moment the sun touches the horizon. The 5–20 minutes after the sun sets — when it illuminates cloud from below the horizon — is typically the peak. Most people leave too early. Stay until the colour fully fades, not until the disc disappears.
