FAA rules and real risks

Why Clouds Ground Drones

Flying in or through clouds creates three distinct problems: regulatory, visual, and moisture. All three apply regardless of drone size or pilot experience.

๐Ÿ“‹
FAA Clearance Requirements
Part 107 and recreational rules require drones to stay at least 500 feet below clouds and 2,000 feet horizontally from them. Flying into cloud violates both requirements and creates collision risk with manned aircraft operating under instrument flight rules inside cloud.
๐Ÿ‘๏ธ
Visual Line of Sight
FAA rules require you to maintain unaided visual contact with your drone at all times. A drone that enters cloud is immediately non-compliant, regardless of FPV equipment. Low ceilings also reduce visibility to the point where maintaining line of sight becomes difficult even without entering cloud.
๐Ÿ’ง
Moisture Damage
Cloud is suspended water droplets. Most consumer drones have no weather sealing. Flying in cloud, or close to the cloud base in high humidity, can introduce moisture into motors, ESCs, and camera electronics over time. Even drones marketed as splash-resistant are not rated for sustained exposure.
๐ŸŒฌ๏ธ
Turbulence Near Cloud Base
Convective activity under developing cloud produces unpredictable vertical air movement. Cumulonimbus and towering cumulus clouds are especially hazardous. Even small cumulus clouds can generate enough updraft and turbulence near the base to cause instability in consumer drones.

Overcast vs. in-cloud

Can You Fly Under Overcast?

Overcast does not automatically ground a drone. What matters is the cloud base height (ceiling), visibility, and precipitation. A 1,500-foot overcast ceiling with 5-mile visibility and no rain is generally flyable within FAA clearance rules. A 300-foot ceiling with drizzle is not. DroneCast scores visibility and cloud conditions alongside wind, precipitation, and temperature so you get a single flyable/caution/ground verdict for your location.

App Exclusive
DroneCast is only available in the iOS app. It's one of six tools in LightCast, alongside FogCast, CloudCast, and TriCast. If you also shoot golden hour or night sky, GoldCast and StarCast send push alerts when conditions hit your threshold, so you never miss a good window.
Common Questions
Is it safe to fly a drone in clouds?
No. Flying in cloud removes visual line of sight, violates FAA cloud clearance rules, and exposes your drone to moisture damage. 500 feet below and 2,000 feet horizontal clearance from any cloud is the FAA minimum for both Part 107 and recreational pilots.
Can I fly my drone when it's overcast?
Often yes, depending on the cloud base height and visibility. If ceiling is above 600 feet, visibility over 3 miles, and no precipitation, flying under overcast is generally compliant. LightCast DroneCast scores these variables together for your location โ€” free on the web or in the iOS app.
What are the FAA rules for drones near clouds?
Under Part 107 and recreational rules: 500 feet below clouds, 2,000 feet horizontally from clouds, and visual line of sight at all times. Flying into cloud violates all three. Flying in Class G airspace at night or in controlled airspace has additional requirements.
Does humidity affect drone electronics?
Yes. High humidity near the cloud base can introduce moisture into motors and electronics over time, even without visible condensation. Most consumer drones are not weather-sealed. DroneCast flags high humidity as a risk factor alongside precipitation probability.
