Where to Shoot

Arches sits on the Colorado Plateau above Moab, where erosion has carved more than 2,000 natural sandstone arches from Entrada Sandstone. The light here turns the red rock from burnt orange at midday to deep crimson and magenta at golden hour. Early morning and late evening are the only times to shoot — midday sun bleaches the color out of the stone entirely.

Delicate Arch Upper Arches · Sunrise / Sunset

The most photographed arch in the world sits in a natural sandstone bowl with the La Sal Mountains rising behind it. The 3-mile round-trip hike gains 480 feet — plan to arrive at the bowl 45 minutes before golden hour. At sunset the arch glows deep red against a cooling blue sky; at sunrise you'll have it nearly to yourself. A longer telephoto (200–400mm) compresses the La Sal snowcaps behind the arch dramatically.

The Windows Section Central Arches · Golden Hour

North Window, South Window, and Turret Arch cluster together within a short walk of the parking area. The double-arch frame through North and South Windows at sunrise is a classic composition. At sunset Turret Arch catches the last direct light. This is a drive-up location that works for all skill levels — arrive 30 minutes before golden hour to claim a foreground position.

Balanced Rock and Courthouse Towers Bortle 3-4 · Night Sky

Balanced Rock is the most accessible night sky foreground in the park — a short pull-off from the main road puts you within a few hundred feet. The galactic core rises over the La Sal Mountains to the southeast from May through August. Courthouse Towers offer massive monolith silhouettes for wide Milky Way arcs. Both locations are far enough from Moab's glow to resolve the core clearly on new moon nights.

Fiery Furnace and Landscape Arch Devils Garden · Long Light

Landscape Arch — the longest natural arch in North America at 290 feet — sits at the end of a 1.6-mile flat trail in Devils Garden. Late afternoon light rakes across the thin ribbon of stone dramatically. The Fiery Furnace requires a ranger permit or guided tour but rewards photographers with intimate sandstone canyon light that's unlike anything else in the park. Both are best in fall when the angle is low all afternoon.
