Where to Shoot

Capitol Reef is Utah's most underrated national park — a 100-mile wrinkle in the earth called the Waterpocket Fold, where layers of Navajo Sandstone, Wingate Cliffs, and Chinle badlands stack into one of the most complex geological landscapes in the Southwest. The historic Fruita settlement adds orchards and pioneer cabins that give the park a human scale missing from its neighbors. Fewer crowds and darker skies reward photographers who make the drive.

Goosenecks Overlook and Sunset Point Sulphur Creek · Sunrise / Sunset

The short trail to Sunset Point above Fruita gives an elevated view across the Fremont River valley and the Capitol Dome — the massive white Navajo Sandstone dome that gives the park its name. At sunset the dome turns from white to deep gold to orange-red. Goosenecks Overlook to the north looks down 800 feet into the entrenched meanders of Sulphur Creek, best at midday when direct light illuminates the canyon floor.

Fruita Orchards and Gifford Homestead Fremont River · Spring / Fall

The historic Fruita district has cherry, peach, apricot, and apple orchards that bloom in April–May and turn in October. The orchards backed by red canyon walls and the Wingate Cliffs create a pastoral landscape scene unusual in the national park system. Dawn light in the orchards with the Capitol Dome behind is one of the softest, most accessible shots in the park. The Gifford Homestead barn makes a strong foreground element at golden hour.

Cathedral Valley Bortle 2-3 · Night Sky

Cathedral Valley in the remote north section of the park requires a high-clearance 4WD vehicle to reach, but delivers some of the most extraordinary night sky foreground in the Southwest — two massive sandstone monoliths called the Temple of the Sun and Temple of the Moon rising 400 feet from a flat desert floor. The Bortle class is 2 here, far from any town, and the galactic core frames perfectly between the temples from May through August.

Hickman Bridge and Cohab Canyon Hiking Trails · Canyon Light

Hickman Bridge is a 133-foot natural arch accessible via a 2-mile round-trip hike above the Fremont River. Late afternoon light comes through the arch opening and illuminates the canyon walls behind. Cohab Canyon Trail climbs quickly from the Fruita campground to a narrow slot canyon that emerges onto a ridge above the Fremont River valley — the elevated position gives a completely different perspective on the Capitol Dome and the layered cliffs of the Waterpocket Fold.
