Month by Month: Galactic Core Visibility

The Milky Way galactic core is visible from March through October in the Northern Hemisphere — but the window, altitude, and timing change significantly each month. June and July are peak, but they're not always the best for your specific situation.

🌱
March–April: Pre-Dawn Only
The galactic core rises above the southern horizon in March but only before dawn. By late April it's visible by midnight. Good for dedicated early-morning shoots but requires 2–4am alarm times for the best window. Spring wildflowers in desert locations add foreground interest.
☀️
May–June: Season Begins
May brings the core above the horizon at reasonable post-midnight hours. June is the first month where a full dark window overlaps with the core being at a useful altitude. New moon nights in June are highly sought — the core is high and the nights are dark enough for strong results.
🏆
July: Peak Month
The galactic core is at its highest altitude and above the horizon for the longest window during full dark. July new moon nights are the most competitive dark sky park dates of the year. Southwest monsoon begins in late July — afternoon storms that often clear for excellent night conditions.
🍂
August–September: Late Season Sweet Spot
The core begins setting earlier each night but autumn transparency is often better than summer — lower humidity and post-frontal air after early cold fronts. September is frequently the best single month for image quality even though June–July offer longer windows.

Common Questions
What is the best month for Milky Way photography?
June and July for the longest dark windows with the core highest. September for often better transparency. Target new moon windows within your preferred month — moon phase matters more than the specific month. StarCast scores conditions for any date — free on web, alerts in the iOS app.
Is July or September better for Milky Way photography?
July for longer dark windows and core altitude. September for better atmospheric transparency and often cleaner air. Both are excellent — the difference is smaller than moon phase, which matters more than the month.
Can you photograph the Milky Way in winter?
The galactic core is below the horizon during nighttime hours November through February in most of the Northern Hemisphere. Winter Milky Way shows a different, less vivid arm of the galaxy — still photogenic but very different from the summer core.
What time does the Milky Way rise in July?
Varies by latitude and longitude, but at mid-US latitudes the galactic core typically clears the southern horizon by 9–10pm in July and reaches its highest point around 1–2am. StarCast shows the dark window timing for your specific location each night.
