What Moon Phase Is Best for Milky Way?

New moon is ideal, but the usable window is wider than most people think. LightCast StarCast scores tonight's conditions using moon phase, moon position, cloud cover, and light pollution.

Moon phase guide

Phase and Position Both Matter

Moon phase tells you how much of the moon is illuminated. Moon position tells you whether it's actually above the horizon during your shoot. Both have to work in your favour. A thin crescent moon that rises at 11pm still limits your window. A quarter moon that sets at 9pm leaves the rest of the night dark.

๐ŸŒ‘
New Moon (0โ€“10% illumination)
Ideal. No moonlight above the horizon. Maximum dark sky from dusk until dawn. The core window for serious Milky Way photography. Plan shoots within 3โ€“5 days of new moon for best results.
๐ŸŒ’
Waxing Crescent (10โ€“35% illumination)
Good. Sets within a few hours of sunset, leaving most of the night dark. The later in the night, the better the conditions. Shoot after the moon sets, typically by 9โ€“10pm depending on phase.
๐ŸŒ˜
Waning Crescent (10โ€“35% illumination)
Good. Rises close to dawn, leaving the early and mid-night hours dark. Shoot earlier in the night, before the moon rises. Often overlooked โ€” waning crescent nights can be some of the best of the month.
๐ŸŒ“
Quarter Moon (50% illumination)
Marginal. Enough sky glow to reduce Milky Way contrast noticeably. Usable only when the moon is below the horizon. A first quarter sets around midnight; a last quarter rises around midnight. Time the gap carefully.
๐ŸŒ•
Full Moon (100% illumination)
Not viable for Milky Way. Full moon produces sky glow that washes out all but the brightest stars. The galactic core becomes invisible or extremely faint. Full moon is above the horizon most of the night. Good for landscape photography with moonlight, not astrophotography.

Common Questions
What moon phase is best for Milky Way photography?
New moon is ideal. The usable window extends roughly 5 days on either side, covering waxing and waning crescent phases when the moon is either below the horizon or below 25% illumination. LightCast StarCast scores both phase and position together for your location.
Can you photograph the Milky Way with a crescent moon?
Yes. A waxing crescent sets early in the evening; a waning crescent rises near dawn. Both leave several hours of dark sky. What matters is whether the moon is above the horizon during your target window, not just its phase.
How much does the moon affect Milky Way visibility?
Significantly. Above 25% illumination with the moon up, Milky Way contrast drops noticeably. Full moon makes the core nearly invisible. Below 25% or after moonset, conditions improve sharply. StarCast factors illumination percentage and moon position into its score.
When is Milky Way season?
In the Northern Hemisphere, the galactic core is visible from roughly March through October, with peak visibility from May through August when the core is highest above the horizon after dark. Outside this window the core rises only briefly or not at all during usable hours.
