Six Things to Verify Before You Leave

Showing up at a dark sky location only to find the moon is up all night, or the forecast cloud cover arrived two hours early, is avoidable. A five-minute check before you leave saves a two-hour drive.

1. Moon Phase and Position
What percentage is the moon illuminated tonight, and when does it rise and set? If the moon is above the horizon for most of your planned shooting window, the night may not be worth the drive — unless you're specifically shooting moonlit landscapes. 2. Cloud Cover for the Night Hours
Check cloud cover specifically for the 10pm–3am window, not just the daytime forecast. Cloud that arrives at 11pm after a clear sunset ruins the shoot. StarCast shows night-specific conditions and the dark window start and end time.

3. Atmospheric Transparency
A clear sky with high humidity or wildfire smoke still produces flat, low-contrast results. Check humidity and transparency, not just cloud cover. High pressure systems and post-frontal air typically produce the best transparency.

4. Overnight Temperature
Desert and high-altitude locations drop significantly overnight. A 75°F afternoon can become a 38°F night in the Southwest. Check the overnight low and pack accordingly. Cold also affects battery capacity — bring more batteries than you think you need.

5. Gear Charge and Backup
Camera batteries, intervalometer batteries, headlamp batteries, phone charge. Cold drains all of them faster than expected. Confirm everything is fully charged before leaving — you won't be near an outlet until morning.

6. Access and Permits
Some locations require advance permits for overnight or after-hours access. National parks, state parks, and tribal lands all have varying rules. Confirm access before driving out — a locked gate or permit requirement discovered at 9pm is a wasted trip.
