Hard limits vs grey zones

When to Ground the Drone

Some conditions are clear no-fly situations. Others require judgment based on your drone model, your experience, and the stakes of the flight. DroneCast separates hard limits from caution zones in its flight score so you can make an informed call.

🌧️
Rain: Hard Stop for Consumer Drones
No consumer drone should fly in any precipitation. Light drizzle is enough to damage motors and electronics that have no weather sealing. Even humidity above 90% over extended flight periods introduces risk. Professional drones with IP ratings exist but are not standard in the consumer market.
💨
Wind: Gusts Are the Real Danger
Sustained wind tells you what the drone is fighting constantly. Gusts tell you what it might face suddenly. A gust 15+ mph above sustained wind is unpredictable and dangerous — the drone can be displaced faster than its stabilisation can compensate. Always check gust data, not just sustained speed.
🌡️
Cold: Reduce Flight Time, Don't Cancel
Cold doesn't ground a drone but demands more conservative battery management. Below 40°F, plan to return at 30% battery rather than the standard 20–25%. Keep spare batteries in an inner pocket to maintain temperature. Cold batteries that appear fully charged can drop suddenly under load.

App Exclusive
DroneCast is updated and improved for the iOS app. It scores all of the above variables together into a single flyable/caution/ground verdict for your location. GoldCast and StarCast send push alerts when golden hour or night sky conditions look strong — useful when you're combining a drone session with a photography shoot.
Common Questions
What weather is too bad to fly a drone?
Hard stops: any precipitation, sustained wind over 20 mph, gusts 15+ mph above sustained, visibility under 3 miles. Caution zones: wind 15–20 mph, temperature under 40°F, humidity above 90%. LightCast DroneCast scores all of these for your location — free on the web or in the iOS app.
Can I fly a drone in light rain?
No. Consumer drones have no weather sealing and should not fly in any precipitation, including light drizzle. Water ingress can damage motors and electronics even in brief exposure.
What wind speed should I not fly a drone in?
Most consumer drones are rated to 20–25 mph sustained, but gusts are more dangerous than sustained wind. For photography quality, above 12–15 mph sustained starts to affect footage stability even if the drone can technically handle it. DroneCast shows both sustained and gust speed separately.
How does cold affect drone battery life?
LiPo batteries lose 20–40% capacity below freezing. Plan for shorter flights and return earlier than normal in cold conditions. Keep spare batteries warm in an inner pocket. Cold batteries can drop from apparent charge to low battery warning rapidly under load.
