Golden hour light is special because warmth, direction, and softness happen at the same time. Midday light is directional but harsh. Overcast light is soft but directionless. Only at golden hour do all three combine — and the atmosphere does all the work.

Warmth: More Atmosphere, Less Blue
When the sun is near the horizon, its light travels through a much thicker slice of atmosphere than at midday. That extra atmosphere scatters the shorter blue and green wavelengths out of the beam, leaving the longer red and orange wavelengths to reach your sensor. The result is light at roughly 2,000–3,500K, compared to midday's 5,500K.

Low-angle light rakes across surfaces at a shallow angle, creating long shadows that reveal texture, depth, and dimension. A sand dune, a brick wall, a face — all look completely different under low-angle light versus overhead midday sun. The shadows are part of what makes the image, not something to work around.
