Astrophotography in Zion National Park

Zion's narrow canyon runs north-south — which creates a unique astrophotography challenge and opportunity. The canyon walls frame a narrow corridor of sky, and the sandstone cliffs catch the faintest starlight and ambient sky glow in extraordinary ways.

Where and When to Shoot in Zion National Park

The main canyon floor is in shadow from the walls for much of the night — the best positions are on the canyon rim or at the canyon mouth where the full sky is visible. Spring and fall are the strongest seasons before summer crowds and monsoon storms.

🏔️
Canyon Overlook Trail
The short trail above the tunnel gives an elevated view looking west into the canyon mouth. The canyon walls frame the Milky Way as it rises over the Zion plateau — a compositional angle unique to this viewpoint.
🌿
Watchman Trail — Lower Section
The lower Watchman trail south of the visitor centre gives open sky with the Towers of the Virgin as foreground to the north. Less canyon wall obstruction than the main canyon floor.
🌌
Kolob Canyons Section
The remote northwestern section of the park has significantly darker sky than the crowded main canyon. The Kolob Canyons Road gives elevated viewpoints with the red canyon terrain as foreground and minimal visitor light interference.
🌊
Virgin River Canyon Floor
The narrow canyon floor gives a unique corridor-of-sky composition — the canyon walls create natural leading lines toward the visible stars overhead. The river adds reflective foreground on calm nights.
