Frequently asked
Is tonight good for stargazing at Zion?
The live score above pulls today's forecast and runs it through StarCast's scoring model, factoring in cloud cover, moon illumination, Bortle class, humidity, and atmospheric transparency. Above 70 is an excellent night. Below 40, conditions are poor. The score updates daily.
What makes Zion good for astrophotography?
Zion National Park is a designated International Dark Sky Park, with Bortle 2 conditions in the backcountry away from the main canyon corridor. The canyon walls themselves create natural light blocking from the small towns below, and the sandstone cliffs glow a deep red under starlight. The narrow canyon and towering formations like the Watchman and Angels Landing create vertical foreground compositions that are hard to find anywhere else for night sky photography. The Virgin River reflecting stars is a signature shot for the park.
When is the Milky Way visible at Zion?
The galactic core is visible from March through October. The canyon's north-south orientation means the core rises to the south and is best framed from the canyon floor looking toward the Watchman during early summer. The Pa'rus Trail along the Virgin River is accessible at night and gives clear southern views without requiring a backcountry permit.
