Best Time to Photograph Fog

Not when it's thickest. The 30–60 minutes after sunrise when fog thins and patches is the most photogenic window. LightCast FogCast scores formation probability and burn-off timing for your location.

The three fog windows

Formation, Peak, and Burn-Off

Fog photography has three distinct phases. Most photographers either miss the shoot entirely or arrive at the wrong phase. The burn-off window is almost always the most photogenic — but it requires knowing when fog is likely to form in the first place.

🌑
Formation: 3am–Sunrise
Radiation fog typically forms in the pre-dawn hours when overnight cooling reaches its minimum. Dense at formation: a uniform grey blanket that blocks most light and visibility. Beautiful from above on hills or in aircraft. Mostly flat and featureless at ground level. The setup is happening — arrive early but wait for sunrise.
🌅
Burn-Off: 30–90 Minutes After Sunrise
Solar heating warms the surface and fog begins to thin and separate into layers and patches. This is the window. Individual wisps separate from the mass. Light penetrates from above and creates depth and texture. The combination of warming golden light and thinning fog produces atmospheric images that can't be replicated at any other time.
☀️
Post-Burn: Gone
Once fog lifts it typically doesn't return until the next overnight cycle. There's no recovering a missed burn-off window. The session is over. This is why FogCast matters — knowing formation is likely lets you set the alarm and be on location before the window opens.

Above vs below the fog

Elevation Changes Everything

The same fog event looks completely different depending on where you're standing. From below in a valley: atmospheric, moody, limited visibility, light diffused. From above on a ridge or hillside: a sea of cloud beneath you with peaks and towers emerging, often with clear blue sky overhead. Both are compelling — the best fog photographers check the terrain and choose a position deliberately rather than just driving to the nearest foggy area.

Common Questions
What is the best time to photograph fog?
The burn-off window: 30–90 minutes after sunrise when fog thins and separates into layers and patches. Dense pre-sunrise fog is flat and featureless at ground level. Fog that has fully burned off is gone. The thinning transition is the target. LightCast FogCast estimates burn-off timing in the iOS app.
What time does morning fog form?
Radiation fog forms in the pre-dawn hours, typically 1–2 hours before sunrise when overnight cooling is at its minimum. Dense valley fog can form earlier, around 2–3am. FogCast shows estimated formation windows alongside probability for your location.
What season is best for fog photography?
Autumn and early winter in most of the US, when warm soil temperatures contrast with cooling overnight air. Coastal California peaks in June–July. Valley fog in the Central Valley and Southeast is most common November through February.
Is it better to shoot fog from above or below?
Both are valid and very different. Below: moody, atmospheric, limited visibility. Above from a ridge or hill: a sea of cloud with peaks emerging, clear sky above. The best fog photographers choose deliberately based on terrain — check elevation and position before driving to the location.
