What the number means

Cloud Ceiling by the Numbers

Cloud ceiling is the height of the lowest cloud layer covering more than half the sky, measured in feet above ground level. It's one of the most useful numbers in a weather report for photographers because it tells you directly whether direct light can reach your subject. A single cloud cover percentage doesn't tell you that. Ceiling height does.

๐ŸŒซ๏ธ
Below 2,000 ft: Flat Light
Low stratus or fog ceiling. All direct sunlight is blocked. Light is flat, even, and directionless. Good for portraits and waterfall photography. Bad for golden hour, landscape drama, and any subject that depends on directional light or sky color.
๐ŸŒค๏ธ
2,000โ€“6,000 ft: Variable
Mid-low cloud. Sunlight may penetrate gaps but the overall character is still soft and diffused. Fog may still be burning off during this range in the morning. Afternoon clouds at this level can produce dramatic crepuscular rays when sunlight breaks through.

6,000โ€“20,000 ft: Golden Hour Zone
Mid to upper-level cloud. Direct sunlight reaches the ground. This is the optimal ceiling range for golden hour and sunset photography. Mid-level altocumulus and altostratus catch and reflect sunset color. A clear horizon band with cloud above is the ideal golden hour setup.
๐ŸŒŒ
Above 20,000 ft: High Cirrus
High cirrus and cirrostratus. Often thin enough that direct sunlight still penetrates. Can produce halos and atmospheric color effects at sunrise and sunset. For astrophotography, even thin high cirrus reduces star contrast noticeably in long exposures.

Why a single percentage misses it

CloudCast Scores by Layer, Not Just Total Cover

A forecast showing 40% cloud cover could mean scattered low stratus blocking all direct light, or scattered altocumulus at 15,000 feet with full sunlight below. The same percentage produces completely different photography conditions. CloudCast separates cloud cover into low, mid, and high layers and scores conditions by shooting target: golden hour, astrophotography, portraits, fog, and landscape.

Common Questions
What is cloud ceiling height?
The height above ground of the lowest cloud layer covering more than half the sky. Low ceilings block direct sunlight entirely. High ceilings allow light to penetrate and create directional illumination. CloudCast breaks cloud cover by layer so you know what's happening at each altitude โ€” available in the LightCast iOS app.
What cloud ceiling is good for golden hour photography?
A clear lower atmosphere with mid to high-level cloud between 6,000 and 25,000 feet. A clear horizon band with cloud above is the ideal setup: direct light from below the horizon catches the cloud base and reflects color across the sky. Low stratus below 2,000 feet eliminates golden hour drama entirely.
Does a low ceiling mean no golden hour?
Generally, yes. A ceiling below 2,000 feet blocks direct sunlight and produces flat light with no sky color. The exception is a clearing or lifting ceiling right at sunset, where a gap between fog and upper cloud can produce brief, intense color as direct light breaks through.
Does cloud ceiling affect drone flying?
Yes. FAA rules require 500 feet clearance below clouds. A ceiling below 900 feet makes it impractical to fly near the 400-foot legal altitude limit while maintaining legal cloud separation. DroneCast factors ceiling height into its flight condition score.
What is LightCast CloudCast?
CloudCast breaks cloud cover into low, mid, and high layers, factors in ceiling height and light penetration, and scores conditions for your shooting target. Exclusive to the LightCast iOS app. $2.99/month after a 7-day free trial.
