Know before you drive: FogCast checks the conditions that produce photogenic fog
Get more than a snapshot of current conditions. The LightCast app unlocks everything to plan ahead
Humidity alone isn't enough. Wind alone isn't enough. Cloud cover alone isn't enough. Photogenic valley fog requires several conditions to line up at once, and most weather apps don't read them together.
Set a FogCast threshold once. The app will alert you when conditions at your saved locations look promising, so you're not manually checking at 4am.
Don't waste a sunrise drive. Check FogCast before you leave.

The cold Labrador Current flowing south along the Maine coast keeps water temperatures low year-round, and when warmer air masses move over those cold waters, dense advection fog forms with remarkable regularity. The Bar Harbor waterfront, the historic Bluenose Ferry terminal, and the rockbound shores of the island become extraordinary fog subjects that have attracted photographers and painters for over a century.
Bar Harbor pier and the town dock give the most dramatic fog compositions — moored lobster boats and sailboats disappearing into fog over flat calm water, with the Porcupine Islands barely visible as dark shapes through the mist. The Bar Island causeway, walkable at low tide, gives a 360-degree fog perspective with the town and Cadillac Mountain behind and Frenchman Bay in front. Shore Path along the rocky coastline south of town is excellent for cliff and tide pool fog photography. June through August is peak fog season, with September and October also excellent and less crowded.
Bar Harbor fog is classic Gulf of Maine advection fog. When a warm air mass from the southwest moves over the cold coastal waters, the air cools to the dew point and fog forms just offshore before moving into the harbor with the night flow. The critical indicator is sea surface temperature — if Frenchman Bay water is below 14°C and air temperatures above 18°C are forecast, coastal fog is almost certain. Check the Acadia National Park weather station for hourly visibility — if it drops to 400 meters or less overnight, the harbor will be photogenically fogged at dawn.
