Why fog is hard to predict
Humidity alone isn't enough. Wind alone isn't enough. Cloud cover alone isn't enough. Photogenic valley fog requires several conditions to line up at once, and most weather apps don't read them together.
Dew Point Depression
When air temperature and dew point converge below 2°C, the air is near saturation. This is the single strongest fog predictor and the first thing FogCast checks.
Wind Speed
Fog needs calm air. Below 5 km/h is ideal. Above 15 km/h, fog disperses before it can pool in the valley. A standard weather app won't flag this combination.
Overnight Sky Clarity
Clear overnight skies let the ground cool rapidly, pushing surface temperatures toward the dew point. Counterintuitively, clouds overnight suppress radiation fog.
Temperature Trend
FogCast reads the overnight temperature arc. If temps are converging toward the dew point hour by hour, fog probability increases significantly by pre-dawn.

Fog photography at Black Canyon of the Gunnison
The Black Canyon of the Gunnison is one of the most dramatic and least visited canyons in the American West — a narrow, nearly vertical gorge carved 823 meters deep into Precambrian gneiss and schist that is so sheer and so deep that sunlight reaches the canyon floor for only a short window each day. When fog forms in the canyon, it is trapped by the vertical walls and sits in the darkness below while the rim stands in bright morning light — a visual contrast of extraordinary intensity.
The South Rim overlooks — Gunnison Point, Chasm View, and Painted Wall View — are the primary photography locations. From these viewpoints, canyon fog appears as a white layer at the bottom of the black walls, with the Gunnison River invisible beneath it. The Painted Wall, the tallest cliff in Colorado at 680 meters of exposed rock, partially emerges from fog in conditions that make its scale even more incomprehensible. The Painted Wall View is the single best fog overlook. October and November are the most reliable months for cold-air pooling fog in the canyon bottom.
Black Canyon fog is river valley radiation fog at its most extreme. The Gunnison River provides continuous moisture to the canyon interior, and the canyon's depth and narrowness make it an extraordinarily effective cold-air trap. On clear, calm nights in autumn, the canyon floor temperature drops 10 to 15°C below the rim temperature by dawn. When the canyon floor reaches the dew point, fog forms and is completely unable to escape the vertical walls. A calm night with a clear sky and freezing temperatures forecast on the rim almost guarantees fog in the canyon interior by sunrise.

Why use FogCast instead of checking humidity?
Humidity alone doesn't tell you whether photogenic fog is likely. High humidity with strong wind produces no fog at all. FogCast combines dew point depression, wind speed, overnight sky clarity, temperature trend, and visibility into a single score built specifically for fog photography planning.
What is FogCast's scoring scale?
FogCast scores fog conditions from 0 to 100. A score of 75 or above indicates dense fog is expected. 55 to 74 means fog is likely and worth chasing. 35 to 54 suggests patchy mist is possible. Below 35, conditions are unlikely to produce photogenic fog. The full score is available in the LightCast app.
