Fog Forecast for Buffalo River

The Buffalo National River cuts through the Ozarks in a deep valley lined with towering limestone bluffs, one of the most scenic river corridors in the country. That combination of a cold, spring-fed river and a narrow, steep-walled valley makes it a strong fog producer, with mist rising off the water and pooling under the bluffs on cool mornings.

Hawksbill Crag is the most photographed overlook in the park, and fog filling the valley below the crag at sunrise is one of the signature shots of the Arkansas Ozarks. Along the river itself, put-in points near Ponca and Kyles Landing give closer views of fog moving along the water's surface.

Fall through early winter brings the most consistent fog, as cold night air settles into the hollows faster than it can drain out. Clear, calm nights are key. Because the bluffs shade parts of the valley well into the morning, fog can persist here longer than in more open terrain.

Humidity alone isn't enough. Wind alone isn't enough. Cloud cover alone isn't enough. Photogenic valley fog requires several conditions to line up at once, and most weather apps don't read them together.
