Know before you drive: FogCast checks the conditions that produce photogenic fog
Get more than a snapshot of current conditions. The LightCast app unlocks everything to plan ahead
Humidity alone isn't enough. Wind alone isn't enough. Cloud cover alone isn't enough. Photogenic valley fog requires several conditions to line up at once, and most weather apps don't read them together.
Set a FogCast threshold once. The app will alert you when conditions at your saved locations look promising, so you're not manually checking at 4am.
Don't waste a sunrise drive. Check FogCast before you leave.

The white sand of Carmel Beach, the Monterey cypress groves, and the rugged offshore rocks combine with persistent marine fog to create a landscape of exceptional photographic richness. The cold California Current runs close to shore here, chilling the marine air and producing fog with remarkable consistency.
Carmel Beach is the central fog photography location — long and wide with offshore rocks that emerge from fog at dawn in dramatic silhouette. The Tor House and Hawk Tower at the south end of the beach, built by poet Robinson Jeffers from local granite, are extraordinary fog subjects. The 17-Mile Drive cypress groves on the Pebble Beach side offer sheltered fog photography through twisted old trees. Pescadero Point and Fanshell Beach provide above-surf vantages over the fogged Pacific. May through August sees the most reliable marine fog, with mornings almost always beginning in fog before partial clearing by afternoon.
Carmel fog is marine layer advection fog driven by cold upwelling and the strong thermal gradient between the cold coast and the warm Salinas Valley interior. Fog forms just offshore and moves onto the beach with the night onshore drift. When inland temperatures exceed 32°C and sea surface temperatures are below 13°C, Carmel Beach will reliably be fogged in from midnight through mid-morning.
