Fog Forecast for the Catskills

The Catskill Mountains rise sharply out of the Hudson Valley, and that elevation change is what makes them one of the best fog regions in the Northeast. On the right morning, valley fog pools below the escarpment while overlooks along the ridge sit in clear air above it, an inversion that photographers chase specifically for the "sea of clouds" effect.

North-South Lake and the Catskill Escarpment Trail are the go-to viewpoints, looking east over the Hudson Valley as fog fills the lowlands at sunrise. Kaaterskill Clove offers a tighter, more dramatic composition with fog threading through the gorge itself. Both require an early start since the inversion layer can break up within an hour of sunrise.

Late summer through fall is prime season, when warm, humid days are followed by cool, clear nights, the setup that produces strong radiation fog and inversions. Check for calm winds and a recent clear night: any cloud cover overnight prevents the ground from cooling enough to trigger fog.

Humidity alone isn't enough. Wind alone isn't enough. Cloud cover alone isn't enough. Photogenic valley fog requires several conditions to line up at once, and most weather apps don't read them together.
