Fog Forecast for Champlain Valley

The Champlain Valley sits between the Green Mountains and the Adirondacks, with Lake Champlain running nearly the full length of it. That geography sets up a classic fog trap: cool air drains off the mountains on both sides overnight and settles over the warmer lake and the open farmland surrounding it, producing fog that often stretches for miles by dawn.

The farmland around Charlotte and Shelburne is known for fog rolling over pastures with Camel's Hump or the Adirondacks as a backdrop. Along the lake itself, the Burlington waterfront and North Beach give open views across the water when fog is sitting low. Covered bridges and old barns scattered through the valley add strong foreground subjects when fog softens the background.

September and October are the strongest months, when the lake is still warm from summer but overnight air is cooling fast. Look for clear, calm nights following a cold front. Wind off the lake is the main thing that clears fog early, so check that forecast closely before heading out.

Humidity alone isn't enough. Wind alone isn't enough. Cloud cover alone isn't enough. Photogenic valley fog requires several conditions to line up at once, and most weather apps don't read them together.
