Fog Forecast for Cumberland Gap

Cumberland Gap sits at the point where Kentucky, Tennessee, and Virginia meet, a natural break in the Appalachians surrounded by a maze of forested ridges and hollows. That terrain produces some of the most consistent layered fog in the eastern mountains, with ridgelines rising out of a solid fog floor on cool, clear mornings.

The Pinnacle Overlook is the defining viewpoint, a short drive to a high perch looking out over all three states at once. On strong fog mornings, only the highest ridgelines break the surface, giving a true sea-of-clouds composition. White Rocks, further along the ridge, offers a similar view with fewer crowds.

Fall and winter bring the most reliable conditions, when cold air settles into the hollows overnight faster than it can drain out. A clear, calm night is the main requirement. Because the Pinnacle sits well above the valley floor, fog is often visible there even on mornings that look only lightly hazy from lower elevations.

Humidity alone isn't enough. Wind alone isn't enough. Cloud cover alone isn't enough. Photogenic valley fog requires several conditions to line up at once, and most weather apps don't read them together.
