Fog Forecast for Dolly Sods

Dolly Sods is a high plateau in the Allegheny Mountains, open heath and wind-bent red spruce above 4,000 feet that feels more like Canada than West Virginia. Because of the elevation, fog here doesn't just sit in the valley below, it moves directly across the landscape, drifting through the spruce and over the exposed rock outcrops at eye level.

Bear Rocks and the Lion's Head area are the standout viewpoints, both offering wide views east into the valley where fog often pools below the plateau while the sods themselves catch drifting cloud. The boardwalk trail through the bog gives a lower, more intimate composition when fog is moving through the spruce.

Summer and early fall mornings are the most active, when warm, moist valley air rises and condenses against the cooler plateau. Because conditions here are driven by elevation as much as overnight cooling, fog can show up even when lower valleys stay clear, so it's worth checking even on nights that don't look promising by usual standards.

Humidity alone isn't enough. Wind alone isn't enough. Cloud cover alone isn't enough. Photogenic valley fog requires several conditions to line up at once, and most weather apps don't read them together.
