Fog Forecast for the Gulf Coast

The Gulf Coast produces a different kind of fog than inland valleys and lakes. Instead of forming overnight from radiant cooling, Gulf fog is often advection fog, warm, moist air moving over cooler water or land, which means it can roll in during the day and linger far longer than typical dawn fog elsewhere on this list.

Beaches and dune lines along the coast offer wide, open compositions when fog is sitting offshore or drifting in over the sand. Coastal marshes and bayous just inland hold fog especially well, with grass and still water giving strong reflective surfaces once the sun starts to break through.

Late fall through winter is the most active season, when cold fronts push chilly air out over the still-warm Gulf. Because this fog is driven by air moving over water rather than overnight cooling, it can show up at different times of day and doesn't always clear on the same predictable schedule as valley fog.

Humidity alone isn't enough. Wind alone isn't enough. Cloud cover alone isn't enough. Photogenic valley fog requires several conditions to line up at once, and most weather apps don't read them together.
