Fog Forecast for Harpers Ferry

Harpers Ferry sits exactly at the confluence of the Potomac and Shenandoah rivers, hemmed in by steep bluffs on both sides. Two rivers meeting in a narrow gap is about as good a fog setup as the region gets: the moving water stays warmer than the surrounding air, and fog forms readily along the surface and drifts up into the gap where the historic town sits.

The Maryland Heights overlook, reached by a moderate climb across the Potomac, is the defining shot: the whole town and confluence laid out below with fog moving through the valley. Down at river level, the Point in Lower Town gives a closer view of fog rolling off the water itself. Both work best right around sunrise.

Fog can appear here in any season since it's driven by the rivers rather than a lake, but fall and spring see the most consistent mornings, when air temperature swings are largest. Look for clear, calm nights: overcast skies or wind through the gap usually mean a thin or absent fog layer by dawn.

Humidity alone isn't enough. Wind alone isn't enough. Cloud cover alone isn't enough. Photogenic valley fog requires several conditions to line up at once, and most weather apps don't read them together.
