Fog Forecast for Mammoth Cave

Mammoth Cave National Park is best known for the longest cave system on earth, but the surface landscape above it, hardwood forest cut by the Green River and dotted with sinkholes, produces its own strong fog on the right mornings. The river runs cooler than the air in summer and warmer in fall and winter, feeding fog into the forest along its banks.

The Green River itself, viewable from several park trails and the ferry crossing, is the most direct fog subject, with mist rising off the water into the trees at dawn. The park's sinkhole valleys also collect cold air overnight and often hold pockets of ground fog after the surrounding ridges have cleared.

Fall mornings are the most productive, when temperature swings between day and night are largest and the forest still holds summer humidity. Clear, calm nights are the main requirement. Fog along the river tends to burn off by mid-morning as sunlight reaches the water.

Humidity alone isn't enough. Wind alone isn't enough. Cloud cover alone isn't enough. Photogenic valley fog requires several conditions to line up at once, and most weather apps don't read them together.
