Know before you drive: FogCast checks the conditions that produce photogenic fog
Get more than a snapshot of current conditions. The LightCast app unlocks everything to plan ahead
Humidity alone isn't enough. Wind alone isn't enough. Cloud cover alone isn't enough. Photogenic valley fog requires several conditions to line up at once, and most weather apps don't read them together.

The elevated ridgelines position photographers above the marine layer on many mornings, with the Golden Gate Bridge towers rising through the fog below and the San Francisco skyline visible across the bay as a faint silhouette in the mist.
Battery Spencer is the most popular overlook, a former military battery with an unobstructed northwest view down the bridge from above. Hawk Hill and the Conzelman Road pullouts offer additional angles. When fog is at bridge-tower height rather than fully socked in, the suspension cables disappear into the cloud while the roadway below remains visible, creating a particularly striking composition.
Summer produces the most reliable fog, matching the broader Bay Area marine layer pattern. The headlands are exposed and windier than the city itself, which can affect fog density. Calm mornings after the fog has settled overnight produce the best conditions for the classic above-fog bridge shots.
