Fog Forecast for Ozark Highlands

The Ozark Highlands stretch across a deeply folded landscape of forested ridges, hollows, and spring-fed rivers, with the Boston Mountains forming the highest, most rugged section. That terrain traps cold air in the hollows overnight, and on clear, calm mornings the valleys fill with fog while the ridgelines above stay in open air.

Overlooks along the Highway 7 and Pig Trail scenic byways through the Boston Mountains give wide views over multiple ridgelines when fog is thick enough to layer several valleys deep. The region's numerous rivers, including the Mulberry and the Illinois Bayou, add river fog to the mix on cool mornings.

Fall is the most reliable season, when warm days are regularly followed by clear, cold nights, the classic setup for radiation fog and inversions. Check for calm wind and a recently cleared sky before heading to a high overlook, since the layered valley views depend on the fog staying thick below ridge height.

Humidity alone isn't enough. Wind alone isn't enough. Cloud cover alone isn't enough. Photogenic valley fog requires several conditions to line up at once, and most weather apps don't read them together.
