Fog Forecast for Petit Jean State Park

Petit Jean Mountain rises above the Arkansas River Valley, giving the park's overlooks a commanding view over a wide stretch of lowland farmland and river bottom. On cool mornings, that valley fills with fog while the mountain itself stays clear, creating one of the more accessible sea-of-clouds views in the state.

The overlooks near Mather Lodge and Stout's Point are the primary viewpoints, both looking directly down into the valley where fog collects. Cedar Falls, a short hike from the lodge, offers a different angle: fog drifting through the canyon below the falls itself rather than the wider valley view.

Fall mornings following a clear, cool night are the most productive, when the temperature difference between the valley floor and the mountain is largest. Because the overlooks sit well above the valley, fog is often visible from the mountain even on mornings that look only mildly hazy at ground level.

Humidity alone isn't enough. Wind alone isn't enough. Cloud cover alone isn't enough. Photogenic valley fog requires several conditions to line up at once, and most weather apps don't read them together.
