Know before you drive: FogCast checks the conditions that produce photogenic fog

Download on the App StorePoint Reyes National Seashore is one of the foggiest places on the US Pacific Coast. The peninsula juts into the Pacific and intercepts marine layer directly, with the Point Reyes Lighthouse recording some of the highest fog frequency of any coastal location in North America. Dense advection fog rolls in from the ocean and often persists all day in summer.
The lighthouse at the tip of the peninsula is the signature fog photography subject, with the structure emerging from or disappearing into the mist depending on the fog ceiling. Tomales Bay on the eastern side of the peninsula sees radiation fog in fall and winter, producing glassy water reflections under soft diffused light. Drakes Beach offers wide compositions with fog wrapping the headlands.
Summer is the foggiest season, but fall brings a different quality of light as radiation fog replaces marine layer. The fog can be so persistent at Point Reyes in summer that planning around clear windows matters as much as planning for fog.
