Fog Forecast for Red River Gorge

Red River Gorge is a deep sandstone canyon system in the Daniel Boone National Forest, known for natural arches, cliff lines, and the river winding through the bottom. The gorge's depth and the river running through it create ideal conditions for fog to pool overnight, especially on cool mornings following warm, humid days.

Chimney Top Rock and Sky Bridge are the two most photographed overlooks, both giving elevated views straight down into the gorge where fog often sits well below the rim. Auxier Ridge offers a longer hike but a wider, more open view across multiple ridgelines when fog is filling several valleys at once.

Fall is the strongest season here, when the day-to-night temperature swing is largest and the river still carries plenty of moisture. Fog typically peaks right around sunrise and clears fast once direct sun reaches the canyon floor, so an early arrival at the overlook matters more here than almost anywhere else on this list.

Humidity alone isn't enough. Wind alone isn't enough. Cloud cover alone isn't enough. Photogenic valley fog requires several conditions to line up at once, and most weather apps don't read them together.
