The Samuel H. Boardman Scenic Corridor covers nearly 18 kilometers of the southern Oregon coast between Brookings and Gold Beach — one of the most dramatic stretches of undeveloped coastline in the contiguous United States. Natural arches, sea stacks, hidden coves, and ancient spruce forests are strung along the cliffs of US-101, and the entire corridor is subject to the Pacific marine fog layer that rolls onshore from the California Current. In fog, the sea stacks become dark shapes emerging from white, and the dense Sitka spruce forest on the cliff tops drips with condensation.

Natural Bridges Cove, Arch Rock, and Thunder Rock Cove are the best fog photography locations in the corridor. When marine fog is present at low tide, the rock formations are dramatic even without strong directional light — the soft, diffused light of thick fog is ideal for long exposures and detail work on the sea stacks and surge channels. Summer — June through August — is the most reliable season, with fog present on most mornings before burning off by late morning.

The southern Oregon coast at Boardman is slightly less foggy than the central coast due to its proximity to the California coast transition zone, but marine fog events are still frequent and often very dense. When a stable marine layer is present offshore the evening before, foggy conditions at the corridor's viewpoints by pre-dawn are highly likely. Fog typically clears from south to north along the coast as the morning progresses.



Humidity alone isn't enough. Wind alone isn't enough. Cloud cover alone isn't enough. Photogenic valley fog requires several conditions to line up at once, and most weather apps don't read them together.

Dew Point Depression
When air temperature and dew point converge below 2°C, the air is near saturation. This is the single strongest fog predictor and the first thing FogCast checks.
Wind Speed
Fog needs calm air. Below 5 km/h is ideal. Above 15 km/h, fog disperses before it can pool in the valley. A standard weather app won't flag this combination.
Overnight Sky Clarity
Clear overnight skies let the ground cool rapidly, pushing surface temperatures toward the dew point. Counterintuitively, clouds overnight suppress radiation fog.
Temperature Trend
FogCast reads the overnight temperature arc. If temps are converging toward the dew point hour by hour, fog probability increases significantly by pre-dawn.
