Know before you drive: FogCast checks the conditions that produce photogenic fog

Download on the App StoreShenandoah National Park runs along the crest of the Blue Ridge Mountains above the Shenandoah Valley, and the valley below is one of the most reliable radiation fog locations in the eastern US. Cold air drains into the flat valley floor overnight and pools, producing dense morning fog that fills the entire valley while the Skyline Drive overlooks above remain clear and sharp.
Stony Man Overlook, Hawksbill Summit, and the numerous Skyline Drive pullouts between mileposts 40 and 60 offer the best elevated views of the fog-filled valley. On the best mornings, only the far ridge of the Allegheny Mountains is visible above the white sea of cloud, with the valley completely hidden below. The fog typically burns off by 10am as the sun heats the valley floor.
Fall is the best season, from mid-October through November, when foliage color and cold overnight temperatures combine to produce consistent morning fog. Spring is the second most reliable window. Arrive at overlooks 30 minutes before sunrise to catch the fog at its densest before clearing begins.
