Know before you drive: FogCast checks the conditions that produce photogenic fog
Get more than a snapshot of current conditions. The LightCast app unlocks everything to plan ahead
Humidity alone isn't enough. Wind alone isn't enough. Cloud cover alone isn't enough. Photogenic valley fog requires several conditions to line up at once, and most weather apps don't read them together.

Download on the App StoreSleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore sits on the eastern shore of Lake Michigan, and the thermal contrast between the cold lake water and warmer land produces sea fog and advection mist that rolls in from the lake in spring and early summer. The massive sand dunes rise 130 meters above the lake and when lake fog moves inland it wraps around the dune slopes and pools in the forested lowlands behind them.
The Dune Climb and the Pierce Stocking Scenic Drive overlooks offer the most dramatic views of fog over the lake, with the dunes in the foreground and the Manitou Islands visible or disappearing into the mist offshore. Glen Haven and Empire Beach give low-angle waterline compositions as fog rolls in off the lake. The Glen Lake area behind the dunes sees radiation fog on calm fall mornings that is separate from the lake fog.
Spring and early summer are the best lake fog seasons, from May through July, when lake water is still cold from winter. Fall brings radiation fog to Glen Lake and the forested inland areas. The combination of dunes, lake, and fog is one of the more distinctive photography subjects in the Great Lakes region.
