The terrace at the east end of Letná Park gives the best panoramic view in Prague. The Vltava bends below you with the Old Town, Charles Bridge, and Prague Castle all in one frame. A Prague sunset tonight from here in summer puts amber light across the entire red-roofed cityscape stretching east. Less crowded than the castle district and gives a wider, more complete composition. The beer garden nearby makes waiting for the light easy.
One of Europe's most photographed bridges, and the only time to shoot it properly is before 7 AM. At sunrise in summer the bridge is lit from the east, the Baroque statues catch warm light, and the castle rises above Malá Strana in the background with almost no one else there. By 8 AM in summer it's genuinely impassable for photography. In autumn and winter morning fog on the Vltava adds atmosphere that disappears within an hour of sunrise.
From the south gardens below the castle you get the opposite view to Letná: looking east over Old Town with the Vltava in the foreground. The sun sets to the west behind you in summer, casting warm light on the orange-red rooftops stretching toward the horizon. The castle itself catches last light from the west. Get there early — the viewpoints along the castle walls fill up at golden hour, especially in summer.
Sandstone rock formations and forested canyon country 110 km northwest of Prague. The Pravčická Gate natural arch and the Elbe Sandstone Mountains give dramatic terrestrial foreground unlike the flat fields around most Czech dark sky sites. Bortle 4 makes it usable for Milky Way core shots on new moon nights from April through September. A committed evening drive, worth planning around confirmed clear conditions.
Prague at its most accessible. Soft light, manageable crowds.
March and April are excellent: before the summer rush, the Charles Bridge and castle viewpoints are accessible at reasonable hours
Cherry blossom in Stromovka Park and Petřín Hill peaks in late March and April, adding foreground color to hillside shots
Golden hour extends rapidly through May: by late May the sun sets past 8:30 PM CEST and Letná has a long warm window
Spring fog on the Vltava in April can produce atmospheric morning conditions that lift by 8–9 AM
Summer · Jun–Aug
Long evenings. Extremely crowded. Sunrise only.
Prague sunset in summer runs past 9 PM CEST — long golden window but the Old Town and Charles Bridge are packed until midnight
The only workable approach for bridge and castle shots in summer is arriving before 5:30 AM: the city is empty and the light is excellent
Letná and the hillside parks are more manageable in summer evenings: fewer people competing for the panorama positions
July and August new moon weekends at Šumava or Bohemian Switzerland are the prime Milky Way target from Prague
Autumn · Sep–Nov
The best season. Low light, fog, quieter streets.
September and October are outstanding: crowds thin significantly, the air clears, and the low autumn sun hits Prague's copper and terracotta rooftops with exceptional warmth
Morning fog on the Vltava is most reliable in October and November: Charles Bridge in fog at dawn is one of Europe's great photography scenes
Autumn foliage in Stromovka and the castle gardens through October adds foreground interest
November brings dramatic Central European skies: fronts pass quickly and clear spells can produce vivid golden hours
Winter · Dec–Feb
Short windows. Snow transforms the city.
Sunset arrives around 4:00 PM in December: brief but the low winter sun rakes across the spires and rooftops with intense amber quality all afternoon
Snow on the Charles Bridge statues and the castle rooftops is genuinely one of the best winter photography scenes in Central Europe
The Christmas markets at Old Town Square and Wenceslas Square run late November through December: warm market lights against the dark blue hour sky
Cold continental air from the east brings Prague's clearest nights: winter star transparency is excellent for dark sky work in the surrounding countryside

September and October are the best months: crowds thin significantly after summer, the autumn light is exceptional on the old city's stone and copper, and morning fog on the Vltava is most reliable. March and April are also strong: quieter than summer with soft spring light and occasional cherry blossom. Winter is excellent for those who don't mind the cold — snow transforms the city completely.
In summer the only window is before 6 AM. In autumn and winter you can get away with arriving around sunrise. The bridge itself is a pedestrian thoroughfare and cannot be closed for photography, so timing is the only tool. October through February weekday mornings before 7 AM are the most consistently quiet. Morning fog in autumn is a bonus: it makes the bridge compelling and keeps casual visitors away.
Bohemian Switzerland NP (110 km northwest, Bortle 4) and Šumava (160 km southwest, Bortle 3–4) are the best options. Both offer dark skies with interesting foreground. Starcast scores conditions before you commit to either drive. Check Šumava conditions →
