Trocadéro
16th · Eiffel Tower facing

The terrace at Trocadéro gives the cleanest straight-on view of the Eiffel Tower in Paris. In summer the sun sets to the northwest and golden light falls directly on the tower's iron lattice. A Paris sunset tonight from here when the sky is colored above the tower is one of the most photographed compositions in Europe. Arrive 45 minutes early for a front position — it gets crowded fast.

Pont de Bir-Hakeim
15th/16th · Two-level Seine bridge

The double-deck bridge with its iron columns and metro line above gives a layered composition with the Eiffel Tower framed in the background. Shoot from the lower pedestrian level for the arches framing the tower, or from the upper metro bridge for the Seine and city beyond. Golden hour light on the metalwork is excellent in spring and autumn when the sun tracks at the right angle.

Montmartre & Sacré-Cœur
18th · 130m above the city

The highest natural point in Paris gives a wide panorama south over the city. The white basilica on the hill catches warm light from the west at golden hour. Shoot the city from the steps or the square behind the basilica for the skyline view. Early morning before 7 AM gives you the hilltop without the crowds and the low-angle light raking across the rooftops below is exceptional in autumn and winter.

Forêt de Fontainebleau
Seine-et-Marne · Bortle 5–6

The closest dark sky escape from Paris. The sandstone forest landscape gives interesting terrestrial foreground unlike typical field-shooting locations. Not true Milky Way territory but usable for wide-field star work and foreground-rich compositions on new moon nights. About an hour by train from Gare de Lyon. Check Starcast before the trip — moon phase makes or breaks it at Bortle 5–6.

Paris by Season
Spring · Mar–May
Cherry blossom, long evenings, manageable crowds.
  • Cherry blossom along the Canal Saint-Martin and in Parc de Sceaux peaks in late March and April
  • Golden hour extends rapidly: by May the sun sets past 9 PM and the Trocadéro has a long warm window
  • Spring light on the Haussmann facades is softer and warmer than summer: lower sun angle, richer color
  • Crowds are building but pre-season — weekday mornings at Montmartre and the bridges are still manageable
Summer · Jun–Aug
Long golden hours. Extremely crowded. Shoot at the edges of the day.
  • Paris sunset in summer runs past 9:45 PM CEST — one of the longest golden hours in Europe at this latitude
  • Trocadéro and Pont de Bir-Hakeim are packed all evening: sunrise (before 6 AM) is the only way to shoot them without crowds
  • The Seine is at its most active with river traffic, boat wakes kill reflections — early morning is cleaner
  • July and August new moon weekends in the Loire Valley are the prime Milky Way window from Paris
Autumn · Sep–Nov
The best season for Paris photography.
  • September and October: crowds drop, air clears, and the low autumn sun rakes across the stone facades with exceptional warmth
  • The Bois de Boulogne and Bois de Vincennes turn gold through October — underrated for Paris landscape work
  • Morning fog on the Seine in October and November creates atmospheric conditions for bridge and river shots
  • November rain brings dramatic skies: breaks between Atlantic fronts can produce the most vivid golden hours of the year
Winter · Dec–Feb
Short windows. Quiet streets. Sharp winter light.
  • Sunset arrives around 5:00 PM in December — brief but the low sun hits the Eiffel Tower and the bridges with intense amber light
  • The city is significantly quieter: the Trocadéro and Montmartre are accessible without crowds on weekday mornings
  • Cold clear air brings Paris's best transparency: sharp sightlines across the city and the best conditions for long focal length compression shots
  • Occasional snow transforms the city completely: the Trocadéro with snow and the tower is one of Europe's great rare photography moments
