Brasstown Bald is Georgia's highest peak at 4,784 feet, offering 360-degree views across the Blue Ridge. The observation tower sits above treeline, making it one of the best elevated sunset platforms in the Southeast. Valley fog in the surrounding hollows is most reliable in fall from September through November, when temperature inversions are common. Vogel State Park below offers a different composition: Blood Mountain reflected in Lake Trahlyta at sunset. Both reward early arrivals — the lot fills quickly on fall weekends.

Cumberland Island is accessible only by ferry, which limits crowds. The interior live oak forests draped in Spanish moss create filtered golden-hour light unlike anything else on the East Coast. The wild horses that roam the island make compelling subjects at sunrise and sunset. The Atlantic-facing beach is wide and undeveloped; the western side along the Cumberland Sound faces the mainland for sunset. Spring and fall offer the best light quality and manageable humidity.

The Okefenokee is one of the largest intact blackwater swamp ecosystems in North America, and its remote interior offers some of the darkest skies in the Southeast. The Stephen C. Foster State Park entrance in the west has a dark sky preserve designation. The reflective black water of the swamp channels creates mirror compositions for the Milky Way when conditions are still. June and July bring the galactic core high in the south. Summer also means high humidity and insects; fall is significantly more comfortable and often clearer.

The Cohutta Wilderness in northwest Georgia is the largest wilderness area in the Eastern US east of the Mississippi. The elevated ridges reach 3,500 feet and provide some separation from Atlanta's glow to the south. The Forest Service roads leading into the area pass through open ridgeline terrain with wide sky views. Fall is the most productive season: stable air, good transparency, and the galactic core still visible for a few hours after dark in September.

The Altamaha River delta is one of the largest and most intact river delta systems on the East Coast. The braided channels, barrier islands, and salt marsh patterns are extraordinary from altitude. The BLM-managed Wolf Island National Wildlife Refuge at the river mouth is off-limits, but the adjacent state wildlife management areas allow drone access. Low tide reveals the most graphic sand and mud flat patterns. Morning launches avoid the sea breeze that builds by midday.

The ridgelines around Blue Ridge and Ellijay provide open mountain airspace with long views across layered Appalachian ridges. Fall color from mid-October through early November makes aerial work here exceptional. The Forest Service road system gives access to launch points without long hikes. Wind is predictably calmer in the morning; afternoon thermals over south-facing slopes can make flight conditions challenging by noon.
