🌅 Sunset & Golden Hour · Kansas
Best Sunset Locations
Kansas has some of the most underrated sunset shooting in the country. The Flint Hills' rolling grass-covered ridgelines glow amber at golden hour, and the chalk formations in western Kansas catch warm light beautifully. Spring storm cells on the western horizon create dramatic backlit cloud structures that are hard to find anywhere else — GoldCast helps you separate the good setups from the duds.
🌾
Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve Chase County · Flint Hills
The last large remnant of tallgrass prairie in North America. The wide, unobstructed western horizon and rolling topography make it one of the most photogenic sunset locations in Kansas. Prairie burns in spring turn the landscape emerald green by early summer. The stone ranch buildings add foreground structure.
🪨
Monument Rocks (Chalk Pyramids) Gove County · Western Kansas
These 70-foot chalk formations rising out of the High Plains catch warm sunset light in a way that feels almost otherworldly. The formations are on private land with public access — no fee, but respect the site. Golden hour from the west-facing faces is the best shooting window.

🌌 Astrophotography · Kansas
Best Astrophotography Locations
Western Kansas is genuinely excellent for astrophotography — wide open skies, Bortle 2–3 in places, and low population density for hundreds of miles. The galactic core is best June through August, rising in the south over the flat plains. The main challenge is wind and, in summer, humidity moving up from the Gulf.
🪨
Monument Rocks / Castle Rock area Bortle 2–3
The chalk formations under a dark western Kansas sky are among the most striking astrophotography compositions in the Great Plains. The entire southern horizon is unobstructed for miles. Wind can be significant; calm nights after summer storms offer the best transparency and stillest air.
🌾
Cimarron National Grassland Bortle 2
The southwestern corner of Kansas — one of the darkest accessible spots in the entire Great Plains. The 360-degree flat horizon means the Milky Way rises fully into view without obstruction. Sand sage and cottonwood trees along the Cimarron River provide foreground options.

🚁 Drone Photography · Kansas
Best Drone Locations
Kansas is drone-friendly terrain — flat, open, and largely unencumbered by major airspace restrictions outside of Wichita. The challenge is wind. The Great Plains can see sustained 20+ mph winds at drone altitude even on calm-seeming mornings. Check Dronecast every time.
🌾
Flint Hills — Chase County Back Roads Chase County · Eastern Kansas
The Flint Hills' rolling grassland looks stunning from altitude — wave after wave of grass-covered ridgelines with no trees and virtually no development. Spring burns and green-up (April–May) and golden fall grass (October) are the two best windows. Sunrise is especially good before wind builds.
🪨
Monument Rocks & Castle Rock Gove County · Western Kansas
The chalk formations rising out of flat farmland create an extraordinary aerial perspective. The site is remote and open, with no airspace conflicts. Fly early morning — afternoon wind in western Kansas routinely makes drone work impractical.
