🌅 Sunset & Golden Hour · Maryland

Best Sunset Locations

Maryland's geography spans three distinct regions, and all three reward landscape photographers differently. The Eastern Shore's tidal marshes and the Chesapeake's open water give the best sunset reflections, while the western mountains offer classic ridge-and-valley alpenglow. Cloud cover is the dominant variable; check GoldCast before you commit to a location on the opposite side of the Bay.

🌾
Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge Dorchester County
Blackwater NWR on Maryland's Eastern Shore is one of the best sunset locations on the entire Atlantic coast. The shallow impoundments and tidal marshes hold enormous numbers of waterfowl from October through March, and the flat terrain means the sun drops below a clean western horizon into open water. The wildlife drive keeps you at marsh level where the light hits the reeds and bird flocks at golden hour. Bald eagle sightings during golden hour are nearly guaranteed in winter. Arrive at the wildlife drive gate an hour before sunset.
🏔️
Weverton Cliffs, South Mountain State Park Washington County
Weverton Cliffs sits above the confluence of the Potomac River and the Shenandoah at Maryland's westernmost edge. The viewpoint looks southwest directly into the setting sun, and the river bend below gives a landscape-photography leading line that's hard to replicate elsewhere in the state. The hike from the C&O Canal trailhead is about 45 minutes and gains 900 feet. October foliage on the Virginia and West Virginia ridges across the river adds color contrast. Arrive with enough daylight to get down safely after dark.

🌌 Astrophotography · Maryland

Best Astrophotography Locations

Maryland's suburban sprawl and proximity to Washington DC and Baltimore make light pollution the primary challenge. Bortle 4 or better skies require traveling to Garrett County in the far west or the ocean side of Assateague Island. The Eastern Shore is darker than it looks on maps, particularly the lower shore below Cambridge. Check StarCast's map view to find where conditions are genuinely dark.

🏝️
Assateague Island National Seashore Bortle 3–4
The ocean-facing beach on Assateague Island is the darkest sky accessible from the Baltimore-DC metro without a long drive. The island faces east, so the western light dome from Ocean City is behind you when shooting toward the Atlantic. The Milky Way rises from the ocean between April and October. Wild ponies on the beach add foreground subject interest that's unique to this location. The beach is open to vehicle access with a permit in some sections; walk-in access from the campgrounds is straightforward.
🏔️
Garrett County, Deep Creek Lake Region Bortle 3–4
The far western corner of Maryland, past Cumberland, holds the state's darkest inland skies. Garrett County's low population density and terrain keep light pollution low. Swallow Falls State Park provides forested canyon access with stream foregrounds for night compositions. The Milky Way is visible from roughly May through September on moonless nights with clear transparency. At 2,400 feet elevation, conditions are cooler and often clearer than the piedmont — bring an extra layer.

🚁 Drone Photography · Maryland

Best Drone Locations

Maryland has moderately complex airspace from the DC SFRA (Special Flight Rules Area) in the south, which requires pilots to be in LAANC before flying within 60 miles of Reagan National Airport. Always check LAANC authorization and any TFRs before flying in Maryland. National wildlife refuges like Blackwater generally prohibit launching from refuge land. Eastern Shore farmland and the western mountains offer accessible terrain outside restricted zones.

🌾
Chesapeake Bay Eastern Shore Farmland Talbot and Queen Anne Counties
The agricultural landscape of the upper Eastern Shore — flat fields, drainage ditches, and tidal creek inlets — is visually compelling from altitude and largely outside controlled airspace north of the Bay Bridge. The geometry of row crops and the irregular tidal shoreline create strong compositional structure from 200 feet. Morning launches in September and October catch golden light and low mist over the fields. Avoid flying near wildlife refuge boundaries and confirm there are no active agricultural spray operations nearby.
🏔️
South Mountain Corridor, Gathland State Park Washington County
The South Mountain ridge gives panoramic aerial views east across the Maryland piedmont and west into the Cumberland Valley — a perspective completely inaccessible from the ground. Gathland State Park at Crampton's Gap has a parking area outside controlled airspace, and the ridge terrain is open for FAA-compliant flight. Fall foliage in mid-October makes this one of the best aerial color shoots in the state. Wind along the ridge can be 10 to 15 mph stronger than in the valley; Dronecast's altitude-sensitive gust layer is worth checking.

Frequently asked
Where is the best place to photograph sunset in Maryland?
Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge on the Eastern Shore delivers the most dramatic sunset conditions in the state, with open marsh water, waterfowl, and a clean western horizon. Check GoldCast for cloud cover before making the drive, especially if you're coming from the Baltimore or DC side of the Bay.
Where can I see the Milky Way in Maryland?
Assateague Island's ocean-facing beach and Garrett County in far western Maryland are your best dark-sky options, both reaching Bortle 3 to 4 on good nights. Use StarCast to check moon phase, cloud cover, and transparency before heading out.
Can I fly a drone near Washington DC in Maryland?
Flying within 60 miles of Reagan National Airport puts you inside the DC SFRA, which requires LAANC authorization for every flight. Many areas in southern Maryland and around the Bay are in controlled airspace. Northern Maryland, the Eastern Shore north of Cambridge, and western Maryland are more accessible. Always check LAANC, B4UFLY, or your drone app before flying anywhere in the state.
When is the best time of year for landscape photography in Maryland?
October is the top month for fall color on South Mountain and the western ridges. October through March is best for Blackwater NWR waterfowl. Assateague works year-round with summer and fall offering the best Milky Way windows. Spring brings bloom and shorebird migration to the Eastern Shore starting in late April.
