Best Landscape Photography Locations in Maryland

Blackwater NWR on Maryland's Eastern Shore is one of the best sunset locations on the entire Atlantic coast. The shallow impoundments and tidal marshes hold enormous numbers of waterfowl from October through March, and the flat terrain means the sun drops below a clean western horizon into open water. The wildlife drive keeps you at marsh level where the light hits the reeds and bird flocks at golden hour. Bald eagle sightings during golden hour are nearly guaranteed in winter. Arrive at the wildlife drive gate an hour before sunset.

Weverton Cliffs sits above the confluence of the Potomac River and the Shenandoah at Maryland's westernmost edge. The viewpoint looks southwest directly into the setting sun, and the river bend below gives a landscape-photography leading line that's hard to replicate elsewhere in the state. The hike from the C&O Canal trailhead is about 45 minutes and gains 900 feet. October foliage on the Virginia and West Virginia ridges across the river adds color contrast. Arrive with enough daylight to get down safely after dark.

The ocean-facing beach on Assateague Island is the darkest sky accessible from the Baltimore-DC metro without a long drive. The island faces east, so the western light dome from Ocean City is behind you when shooting toward the Atlantic. The Milky Way rises from the ocean between April and October. Wild ponies on the beach add foreground subject interest that's unique to this location. The beach is open to vehicle access with a permit in some sections; walk-in access from the campgrounds is straightforward.

The far western corner of Maryland, past Cumberland, holds the state's darkest inland skies. Garrett County's low population density and terrain keep light pollution low. Swallow Falls State Park provides forested canyon access with stream foregrounds for night compositions. The Milky Way is visible from roughly May through September on moonless nights with clear transparency. At 2,400 feet elevation, conditions are cooler and often clearer than the piedmont — bring an extra layer.

The agricultural landscape of the upper Eastern Shore — flat fields, drainage ditches, and tidal creek inlets — is visually compelling from altitude and largely outside controlled airspace north of the Bay Bridge. The geometry of row crops and the irregular tidal shoreline create strong compositional structure from 200 feet. Morning launches in September and October catch golden light and low mist over the fields. Avoid flying near wildlife refuge boundaries and confirm there are no active agricultural spray operations nearby.

The South Mountain ridge gives panoramic aerial views east across the Maryland piedmont and west into the Cumberland Valley — a perspective completely inaccessible from the ground. Gathland State Park at Crampton's Gap has a parking area outside controlled airspace, and the ridge terrain is open for FAA-compliant flight. Fall foliage in mid-October makes this one of the best aerial color shoots in the state. Wind along the ridge can be 10 to 15 mph stronger than in the valley; Dronecast's altitude-sensitive gust layer is worth checking.
