🌅 Sunset & Golden Hour · Nebraska

Best Sunset Locations

Nebraska's Great Plains geography is one of the most underrated sunset canvases in the country. The wide-open sky means you see the full arc of color from horizon to horizon — no hills cutting off the show early. The Sandhills region in the north-central part of the state gives you rolling grass-covered dunes with almost zero light pollution and a tremendous sense of scale. Thunderstorm structure at golden hour is a legitimate photographic subject here in spring and early summer — a distant cell lit from below at sunset is unlike anything you'll find on a coastline. Check GoldCast before heading out.

🌾
Chimney Rock National Historic Site, Bayard Morrill County · Panhandle
Chimney Rock is Nebraska's most iconic geological landmark — a narrow spire rising 325 feet above the North Platte River valley. At sunset, the warm light sculpts the sedimentary layers beautifully and the surrounding badlands terrain turns amber and sienna. The official viewpoint to the south gives a clean silhouette composition, while the north side offers foreground wildflower options in late spring. The flat surrounding terrain means you can see weather coming from miles out.
🏞️
Nebraska Sandhills, Cherry County Valentine · Sandhills Region
The Sandhills cover nearly a quarter of Nebraska — the largest sand dune formation in the Western Hemisphere, stabilized by native grass. At golden hour the grass glows and the rolling topography casts long shadows that reveal the land's sculptural quality. The wet meadows and seasonal lakes near Valentine catch pink and orange sky reflections. There are no crowds here and very few fences on public roads; the light feels entirely yours.

🌌 Astrophotography · Nebraska

Best Astrophotography Locations

Nebraska is one of the best-kept secrets in American astrophotography. The Sandhills and Panhandle regions rank among the darkest accessible areas in the continental United States — Bortle 2 skies within a reasonable drive of nowhere in particular. The flat terrain and low humidity of the high plains produce excellent atmospheric transparency, which means star colors and faint nebulosity show up in ways they simply don't in humid eastern states. Wind is the main variable to manage — it can shake a tripod or dust your sensor fast. Check StarCast for transparency and cloud cover before committing to the drive out.

🌑
Merritt Reservoir, Valentine Bortle 2–3
Merritt Reservoir is the anchor of one of the darkest patches of sky in the Great Plains. The Nebraska Star Party has been held here for decades for exactly that reason. The reservoir's surface works as a reflection foreground for Milky Way compositions from spring through early fall, and the surrounding Sandhills terrain is utterly flat to the south — exactly what you want when shooting core. Camping is available on-site; a multi-night stay rewards patience with exceptional conditions.
🪨
Toadstool Geologic Park, Crawford Bortle 2
Toadstool is Nebraska's answer to Utah's badlands — mushroom-shaped rock formations rising from eroded clay hills in the Oglala National Grassland. At night the formations make extraordinary foreground subjects under the Milky Way, and there is almost no artificial light within many miles. The area has primitive camping. Shooting here in late July puts the Milky Way core directly above the tallest toadstool formations for about a two-hour window around midnight.

🚁 Drone Photography · Nebraska

Best Drone Locations

Nebraska's open landscape is ideal for aerial photography — long sight lines, uncluttered terrain, and relatively few restricted airspace zones outside Omaha and Lincoln. The Sandhills' grass-on-dune texture reads beautifully from altitude, especially at low sun angles. Wind is the primary operational concern — afternoon gusts on the plains can exceed drone limits quickly. Morning launches before 10am are almost always more stable. Check Dronecast for hourly wind and gust forecasts before every flight, and verify FAA LAANC authorization near the state's airports.

🌊
Platte River, Kearney — Crane Migration Buffalo County · Central Nebraska
Every spring, the Platte River near Kearney hosts one of the great wildlife spectacles in North America — more than half a million Sandhill Cranes staging before their northern migration. From altitude, the river braids and sandbars carpeted with cranes is an image that doesn't exist anywhere else. The migration peaks in late February through late March. Sunrise launches produce the most dramatic light. Be mindful of wildlife disturbance guidelines; fly high enough not to flush the birds.
🏜️
Scotts Bluff National Monument, Gering Scotts Bluff County · Panhandle
Scotts Bluff rises 800 feet above the North Platte River valley floor and the aerial view of the bluff, river, and surrounding agricultural patchwork is genuinely striking. The monument itself is National Park Service land where drones are prohibited, but the surrounding public lands and open roads to the north and east of the monument boundary give clear lines of sight to the formation. The Panhandle's typically clear skies and low humidity mean excellent image quality.

Frequently asked
Where is the best place to photograph sunset in Nebraska?
Chimney Rock at sunset is Nebraska's most iconic shot — warm light on the spire against a painted Panhandle sky. For a wider, more immersive experience, the Sandhills near Valentine give you glowing grass, water reflections, and a sky that goes all the way to the floor. Check GoldCast for cloud cover before you head out.
Can you see the Milky Way in Nebraska?
Yes — exceptionally well. Nebraska's Sandhills and Panhandle have some of the darkest skies in the continental U.S., with Bortle 2 conditions accessible by road. Merritt Reservoir and Toadstool Geologic Park are the premier destinations. You need a new moon window; check StarCast for moon phase, transparency, and cloud cover.
Where can I fly a drone in Nebraska?
Nebraska's open terrain is generally drone-friendly outside Omaha, Lincoln, and the immediate areas around airports. The Platte River valley near Kearney and public lands around the Panhandle offer great subjects. National Monument land (like Scotts Bluff itself) prohibits drones — fly from adjacent public roads. Always check FAA LAANC authorization.
When is the best time to photograph the Sandhill Crane migration in Nebraska?
The peak staging period on the Platte River near Kearney runs from late February through late March, with the largest concentrations typically in the first two weeks of March. Sunrise and sunset are the prime shooting windows, when the cranes lift and land en masse. GoldCast's golden hour forecast helps you time your position on the river banks.
