Best Landscape Photography Locations in Pennsylvania

The North Lookout at Hawk Mountain sits at around 1,500 feet with a sweeping west-facing view across the folded Appalachian ridges. In autumn, raptor migration and peak foliage overlap, which makes September and October the peak photography season by a significant margin. The layered ridgelines turn gold and copper in late afternoon light, and on clear days you can see four or five parallel ridges receding into the haze. Arrive early in fall — parking fills before noon on weekends.

The gap where the Delaware River cuts through Kittatinny Ridge gives you a classic river-and-mountain composition. The overlook at Mount Tammany (across in NJ) or the Pennsylvania side near Dingmans Falls put you above the river with long views north and south. Late afternoon in October produces warm sidelight on the ridges and river bends. Fog often settles into the gap at dawn, which makes blue hour and sunrise worth a separate trip.

Cherry Springs is one of the darkest designated dark sky parks in the eastern United States. The summit sits at 2,300 feet in the middle of Susquehannock State Forest, shielded from nearby town light by surrounding ridges. The dedicated astronomy field has a designated observing area, and the park actively manages light discipline — no white lights after dark. The Milky Way core is visible from spring through fall, and on a good night the zodiacal light is detectable. Reserve a camping spot well in advance; it books out months ahead on new moon weekends.

The overlook at Hyner View sits at the edge of a ridge above the Susquehanna River and is known primarily as a hang gliding launch, but the dark skies are a serious draw for photographers. The open south-facing plateau gives a clean view of the Milky Way core from a Bortle 3 environment, and the river valley below sometimes fills with fog that creates an interesting base layer for wide-angle compositions. Less trafficked than Cherry Springs on popular weekends.

The Susquehanna River valley from the ridges above Hyner is one of the most dramatic aerial compositions in the state. The wide river bends and forested ridges on either bank create natural layering that reads well in both color and long-exposure conditions. The launch site at Hyner View is accessible by car, which simplifies equipment logistics. Morning shots before thermal activity builds give the calmest conditions; afternoon valley haze can soften contrast by midday.

The tight creek gorge and surrounding forest at Worlds End make for compelling aerial work in fall. The Loyalsock Creek cuts a narrow, winding path through the hemlock and hardwood forest, and from altitude the canyon structure is immediately readable. The area is remote enough to be Class G airspace, and the surrounding Loyalsock State Forest offers multiple access points. Peak foliage here typically runs mid-October and the ridge color is exceptional in good light years.
