Skyline Drive's 75 miles of ridgeline road provide over 70 overlooks, many of them facing west over the Shenandoah Valley. The key in spring and fall is the valley fog — when cold air sinks into the hollows and warm air sits above, you get a sea of cloud below the overlook that turns gold and pink at golden hour. Virginia's Eastern Shore barrier islands are among the most undeveloped stretches of Atlantic coast remaining on the East Coast. Chincoteague's marshes, tidal flats, and open ocean beach face east for sunrise and south for afternoon light. The refuge is famous for wild ponies, which occasionally wander into shooting range at dawn. The Wildlife Loop road through the marsh is the most productive route; arrive before official opening time and you'll often have it to yourself during the best light.

Virginia's least populated county sits at the far western edge of the state, flanked by the Allegheny Mountains. The Highland Wildlife Management Area and surrounding ridgelines offer exposed dark-sky positions with minimal ambient light. The Monterey area provides basic services and some dispersed camping access in the national forest. At over 5,000 feet in elevation, Grayson Highlands sits above most atmospheric haze and well away from major population centers. The open bald mountaintops — maintained by grazing wild ponies — give unobstructed 360-degree sky access with no tree canopy interference. The Milky Way core is visible from late March through October on moonless nights. The campground puts you on-site for predawn Milky Way shooting without driving up in the dark. Cold and wind are significant factors; prepare for winter-like conditions even in October.

Virginia's second-largest lake covers over 20,000 acres and has over 500 miles of shoreline — a massive aerial subject well away from the DC airspace restrictions. Morning mist over the water burns off slowly in autumn, creating layered fog and reflection shots that are difficult to achieve from the ground. The lake is surrounded by forested hills and private docks that create interesting geometric patterns from altitude. Check local ordinances for specific launch areas; most shoreline access points are usable.

The national forest lands west of the Shenandoah Valley offer drone-permissible terrain with ridge-and-valley topography that photographs well from above. The alternating forested ridges and agricultural valleys create a repeating pattern that's distinctive in aerial work. Fall color here peaks in mid-October and runs deep into the lower elevations by the first week of November. Forest Service roads provide access to ridgelines without hiking; morning launches before thermal activity begins give the smoothest flight conditions.
