🌅 Sunset & Golden Hour · Washington

Best Sunset Locations

Washington State is divided into two completely different photographic worlds by the Cascades. West of the range: temperate rainforest, fjord coastline, volcanoes draped in cloud, and long summer twilights that blur golden hour into something hour-long. East of the range: dry scablands, wheat country, Columbia River gorge, and reliably clear skies. The Cascades generate their own clouds — peaks like Rainier and Baker are frequently obscured even when the surrounding lowlands are clear. Check GoldCast for summit-level conditions separately from valley conditions.

🌋
Reflection Lakes, Mount Rainier National Park Pierce County · Paradise area
When Rainier is out — meaning the summit is clear and reflected in the lakes below — it's one of the most photographed compositions in the Pacific Northwest. The timing window is narrow: the mountain generates its own cloud cap most afternoons, so the clearest views are typically early morning. Sunset light on the mountain's west face, with alpenglow on the ice fields, is exceptional on the rare clear evening. Check the summit webcam and GoldCast together before making the drive up to Paradise.
🌊
Ruby Beach, Olympic National Park Jefferson County · Olympic Peninsula
Ruby Beach's sea stacks, driftwood, and tide pools face west into the Pacific for direct sunset light. The rough, ancient formations — covered in orange and yellow lichen — catch warm color beautifully in the final hour before sunset. Pacific cloud banks frequently move in from the west, which can kill the light abruptly or produce spectacular color right at the horizon's edge. The beach is accessible year-round and the walk from the parking area is short — ideal for carrying tripod and full camera kit.

🌌 Astrophotography · Washington

Best Astrophotography Locations

Washington's west side is one of the cloudiest regions in the continental US — astrophotography there requires patience and a very good forecast. The east side changes everything. Eastern Washington's open, dry terrain has minimal light pollution outside Spokane, and the summer clear-sky streaks can run for weeks. The North Cascades provide high-elevation shooting with genuinely dark skies. Summer is the strategic window — clear nights are frequent from late June through September east of the Cascades, and the Milky Way core is well-positioned in the southern sky. Check StarCast and plan east-side trips when west-side clouds close in.

🏔️
Washington Pass Overlook, North Cascades Bortle 2–3
At 5,477 feet on the east side of the North Cascades, Washington Pass sits at the transition zone between wet west and dry east — meaning summer nights are frequently clear when the Puget Sound lowlands are socked in. The jagged granite spires of Liberty Bell Mountain and the Early Winters Spires provide dramatic foreground against the sky. The highway closes in winter (usually November through April), so summer and early fall are your windows. This is remote terrain — carry navigation and extra layers.
🌾
Channeled Scablands, Eastern Washington Bortle 2–3
The ancient flood-scoured basalt landscape east of Spokane offers some of the darkest accessible skies in the Pacific Northwest. Sun Lakes–Dry Falls State Park sits within this region — the remnant of the largest known waterfall in geologic history. The dry canyon walls and basalt rimrock provide striking foregrounds for Milky Way shooting. Summer nights in the Columbia Basin are reliably clear, and temperatures stay manageable compared to the alpine locations. Mosquitoes in June can be significant; plan accordingly.

🚁 Drone Photography · Washington

Best Drone Locations

Washington's aerial photography opportunities are extraordinary — volcanoes, fjords, wheat fields, river deltas — but the airspace complexity matches. Sea-Tac and Boeing Field create significant restricted zones around the greater Seattle area, and all national park land (Rainier, Olympic, North Cascades) prohibits drone use. The Cascades have active wilderness airspace restrictions. Eastern Washington offers the best drone-accessible terrain with generally cleaner airspace and dramatic subjects. Always check FAA authorization before any flight in Washington State.

🌾
Palouse Region, Whitman County Eastern Washington · Pullman area
The Palouse's rolling wheat hills create some of the most distinctive aerial patterns in North America. In late spring, the green and gold contour lines of different crop varieties and growth stages read as abstract art from altitude. Steptoe Butte — a quartzite island rising 1,000 feet above the surrounding hills — provides both a ground-level overlook and a launch point for aerial work. Harvest season in July-August changes the palette entirely. Winds in the Palouse are generally lighter in the morning hours.
🏞️
Columbia River Gorge, Klickitat County Washington side · Lyle to White Salmon
The Washington side of the Columbia River Gorge offers drone access that the Oregon side's land-management rules sometimes restrict more heavily. The basalt cliffs, river bend, and Hood River valley visible from the Washington shore create compositions with multiple depth layers. The Gorge is famous for consistent wind — which is what makes it a world-class windsurfing destination and what makes drone work demanding. Check Dronecast carefully; the same thermal and pressure-driven winds that attract kiteboarders will challenge your aircraft.

Frequently asked
Where is the best place to photograph sunset in Washington State?
Ruby Beach on the Olympic Peninsula gives direct Pacific Ocean sunset views with dramatic sea stacks. Mount Rainier's Reflection Lakes is the most iconic when the mountain is clear — which requires checking both summit and valley cloud cover. Use GoldCast to time your golden hour window and confirm cloud cover at your chosen elevation.
Where is the best astrophotography in Washington State?
Eastern Washington dramatically outperforms the west side for night sky work. The Channeled Scablands near Dry Falls and Washington Pass in the North Cascades are the top locations. Clear summer nights east of the Cascades can run for weeks. Check StarCast and compare east vs. west side conditions before deciding where to go.
Can I fly a drone in Washington State?
Drones are prohibited in all three of Washington's national parks (Rainier, Olympic, North Cascades). The greater Seattle area has significant airspace restrictions from Sea-Tac and Boeing Field. Eastern Washington — particularly the Palouse and Columbia River Gorge on the Washington side — offers the best accessible drone terrain. Always verify FAA authorization before flying anywhere in the state.
When is the best time for landscape photography in Washington?
Summer (July–September) brings the clearest skies on both sides of the Cascades and the best chances at unobscured mountain views. Spring brings wildflower blooms at subalpine meadows in July–August. The west side winter is rainy and moody — excellent for coastal and rainforest fog photography, but plan around weather windows carefully. Palouse wheat patterns peak in late May–June before harvest.
