The quartzite fins of Seneca Rocks rise 900 feet above the North Fork Valley and provide a dramatic vertical foreground under the Milky Way. The area sits within the National Radio Quiet Zone, so you'll find unusually dark skies with minimal light dome interference. The valley below the rocks fills with fog on clear autumn nights — positioning yourself on the ridge above the fog layer gives you the rocks silhouetted against stars with a white cloud sea below. The climber's parking area at the base of the rocks is accessible year-round.

At 4,863 feet, Spruce Knob is West Virginia's highest point and sits fully within the National Radio Quiet Zone. The wind-flagged spruce trees on the summit — all bent permanently east by prevailing winds — provide an eerie and distinctive foreground. The open summit gives 360-degree sky access, and the isolation of Monongahela National Forest ensures no nearby town light domes. The paved road to the summit is open seasonally and can be icy into May. This is one of the best dedicated astrophotography spots east of the Mississippi.

Summersville Lake's turquoise water surrounded by sandstone cliffs is one of West Virginia's most distinctive aerial subjects. The unusually clear water — a product of the dam and the sandstone geology — reads vivid teal from altitude, contrasting sharply with the forested cliff tops. The lake is a popular rock climbing destination, so the cliff faces are well-mapped and flight paths can be planned to complement the visual scale of the walls. Morning launches avoid the afternoon powerboat traffic that disturbs the water's surface reflections.

Canaan Valley is the highest valley of significant size east of the Rockies — a broad, flat-bottomed highland basin at 3,200 feet surrounded by forested ridges. The open wetlands and bogs hold morning mist exceptionally well, and aerial views of the valley fog layer against the surrounding ridgelines are among the most compelling landscape compositions in the state. The state park and national wildlife refuge in the valley offer accessible land; confirm drone policies with each agency before flying. Winds on the surrounding ridge can be significantly stronger than in the valley below.
